The CHAMP (Collaborative Home Alternative Medication Program) Clinic is an outpatient weaning clinic for babies born substance exposed or with Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) who need medication treatment.
The goal of CHAMP is to allow babies to safely wean off medications while at home with parents, which improves the parent-infant bond. The babies continue to wean on an outpatient basis. Medication changes are made twice weekly, over 6 to 12 weeks, as not to induce withdrawal thereby limiting the symptoms.
The CHAMP clinic offers a team approach, which providers support to parents and families during treatment. The clinic also provides follow up services, including developmental assessments. The team includes a Neonatologist from Eastern Maine Medical Center as well as Pediatricians, Pediatric Nurse Practitioners, Social Workers and Care Managers from PCHC’s Penobscot Pediatrics.
Referrals to the CHAMP Clinic are made by Eastern Maine Medical Center.
